You probably need to upgrade the electrical panel if:
- The home is 20+ years old. Today’s appliances require more electricity. Newly built homes typically include 200 amp panels. To meet your growing electrical needs, a new panel is probably necessary.
- The electrical panel gets warm. An overloaded panel can feel warm to the touch. A bad circuit breaker or improperly connected wire can cause a burning smell. These issues need to be addressed immediately.
- There’s faulty wiring. If you’ve noticed dimming or flickering lights, sparking or discolored power outlets and/or a mild shock when touching appliances, these are signs of faulty wiring. Your wiring may not comply with today’s safety codes and present a fire risk.
- You’re adding appliances. As you install new appliances, the electric panel may not have sufficient power to operate them. Tripping circuit breakers are an indication that you need a panel upgrade.
- You’re dealing with fuses rather than circuit breakers. Fuses are outdated and a fire hazard. When a fuse detects a current running at too high of a level, the fuse will melt. Circuit breakers can simply be reset.
